Story County Conservation (SCC) provides numerous volunteer opportunities for all ages. Whether you would like to volunteer individually or as a group, we would like you to be a part of our team! ADMINISTRATIVE
Clerical - General office projects, including copying, folding brochures, answering the telephone, and preparing mailings.
Data Entry - General computer data entry. Computer experience is requested but not required.
Conservation Center Host - Greet visitors upon arrival at the center; record the number of visitors; answer visitors' questions or directs them to the appropriate resources; and promote SCC events. Training is provided. and an informational manual is available for reference. This opportunity is on Sundays, 2-5 p.m. from April through October.
Landscape History Volunteer - Researches Story County Conservation areas using books and records at libraries and courthouses. Volunteers will be assigned a research area by SCC as the need arises and work independently to gather information.
Photographers - Attend special events and photograph the event's activities for archive and use in publications. Photographers may use SCC camera or their own personal equipment. Photographs are eligible for the Partners Photo Contest.
PRAIRIE & ROADSIDE MANAGEMENT
Seed Harvest - Collecting seed from native prairie plants by hand September through October. Can be done with a group at a scheduled event or on your own with instructions from staff.
Cleaning Prairie Seed - Cleaning and separating seed from chaff by hand as needed. Instructions provided.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Program Assistance - Set-up, clean-up, and serving food for O.W.L.S. (older, Wiser, Livelier, Seniors) programs; acting, guiding, carving pumpkins, and serving refreshments for Halloween Hikes; assisting with summer youth programs; repairing fishing poles; and providing assistance at public programs.
PARK & TRAIL MAINTENANCE
Trail Maintenance - Mowing, pruning, cleaning, and other trail maintenance. Some heavy lifting may be required. Picking up and disposing of litter properly may also be needed as part of trail maintenance. Participation in scheduled Trail Enhancement And Management (TEAM) Days involves trail work on a specific project led by staff.
Gardening, and Tree and Shrub Planting/pruning - Planting, weeding, and labeling butterfly, hummingbird, and wildlife habitat gardens at the conservation center and other county areas as directed by staff.
Bluebird Program - Monitoring and maintaining bluebird boxes on county areas; checking the boxes weekly from April 1 to August 31; and completing records on boxes. Some general carpentry skills may be needed. A lot of walking is required.
STORY COUNTY CONSERVATION PARTNERS welcomes assistance to achieve its goals of increasing public awareness, information, and appreciation for Story County Conservation parks, natural areas, programs, and activities; to develop a net work of supporters and volunteers; and to secure supplemental financial resources.
Advisory Committee - Provides SCC staff with suggestions and input on all major aspects of the Partners organization. The committee meets four to six times per year.
Events Planning - Consists of planning, organizing, and making arrangements for spring and fall festivals which help publicize the program and increase memberships.
Corporate and Business Sponsorship - aids in soliciting funding from area corporations and businesses in order to secure supplemental funding for Partners.
Membership and Recruitment - helps gain new members and keeps current members.
