Election Officials Wanted

Election Officials at work during the June 26 Ames Special Election

Would you like to earn some extra money? When there is an election in Story County, we need people to staff the polling places. We are always looking for individuals who would be interested in being election officials.

Qualifications

Iowa state law requires election officials to be a registered voter who has stated a political party preference (Democrat or Republican). You must also be a resident of Story County.

Election officials attend a school of instruction before an election where the details of working a polling site are reviewed. The school of instruction usually lasts 1-2 hours.

On election day, election officials arrive at a polling place about an hour before the polls open and remain at the polling place for about an hour after the polls close. There are at least three election officials at every polling place. The election workday is 15 or 16 hours depending on the election. There is also the option of working a 1/2 day.

What Does an Election Official Do?

Compensation

Election officials are paid $6.25 an hour for their work at the polls and for time spent at the school of instruction. Election officials who chair polling places are paid $6.75 an hour. Mileage is also paid at .31 cents per mile when travel exceeds five miles. Cell phone calls are reimbursed $1.00 per call if needed on election night.
