SCC manages nearly 2,500 acres of parks and natural areas for outdoor recreation and takes an active role in developing and managing wildlife habitat throughout the county, including assistance to private landowners.
SCC's Environmental Education Program works with school districts to provide classroom programs and outdoor field trips that promote environmental awareness and enjoyment of our natural resources.

| July 09, 2009 12:19:48 PM | Enjoy the Skunk River Safely Summer use of the Skunk River has been sporadic over the past few years. Frequent high water has certainly been an issue for river users. Frequent rain has also kept mosquito numbers at the uncomfortable level for all but the most dedicated outdoors people. Wet conditions have continued this year, but that hasn't prevented the growth of an activity hadn't been that popular until this year.

| June 15, 2009 02:14:45 PM | Prairie Photos on Display at Story County Conservation Story County Conservation invites the public to view "O'Neil Prairie," a photography exhibit by David Ballard of Ames. The exhibit is on display from June 29 to August 27 at the Story County Conservation Center at McFarland Park (56461 180th St.) northeast of Ames. Displays in the center?s multipurpose room may be viewed from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sundays from 2:00-5:00 p.m. unless a private meeting is in progress. Visitors traveling distances are asked to call ahead for viewing availability.
