SCC manages nearly 2,500 acres of parks and natural areas for outdoor recreation and takes an active role in developing and managing wildlife habitat throughout the county, including assistance to private landowners.

SCC's Environmental Education Program works with school districts to provide classroom programs and outdoor field trips that promote environmental awareness and enjoyment of our natural resources.

The mission of Story County Conservation (SCC) is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Story County by wisely managing our natural resources, by providing recreational opportunities, and by educating citizens to be wise caretakers of our natural environment.

ISU Pheasants Forever Chapter to Host Banquet
The Story County Pheasants Forever Chapter is mentioned often in this column. They have been at the center of wildlife habitat work on both public and private land in our area for more than 20 years. Like all PF chapters, the funds they raise stay primarily at home to acquire and develop local habitat. There's another PF chapter in the county, though, and they're doing their part to achieve the same goals. The ISU Pheasants Forever Chapter is the only collegiate chapter in the country.

Summer Jobs
Story County Conservation is seeking to fill the following summer positions: park aides, waterfront aides, naturalists, and vegetation management interns, plus a resident campground attendant (18-week contract). Minimum age and education requirements vary. Application deadline is February 17.

Trek the Trails Snowshoe and Trail Run

Come explore some of central Iowa's most scenic trails in the second annual Trek the Trails! This four mile trail event will trek through Story County Conservation's McFarland Park, across prairie, woodland, and along the Skunk River. Be prepared - there will be hills!

You'll not only be enjoying a fun trek through McFarland Park, your proceeds will go toward the development and maintenance of Story County Conservation Trails.

Photo Contest

Story County Conservation Partners is announcing submission dates of March 15-31, 2010 for its annual photo contest. The contest is open to all amateur photographers. Images from the contest are used to enhance Story County Conservation's photo library and encourage people to visit and enjoy Story County Conservation's parks. While the photo entries won't be due until March 2010, photographers are encouraged to take pictures throughout the year. Fall is the perfect time to capture the beauty of changing colors, an unusual migrating wildlife specimen, or families enjoying a perfect fall day.
