The Commission of Veterans Affairs provides assistance to Story County veterans and/or their family members who were discharged under Honorable Conditions. Veterans need to have served 90 consecutive days of active Federal service, not counting training.

 

Help with the following needs is available, subject to eligibility guidelines:

 

  • Rent or mortgage payments
  • Utilities
  • Food and provisions
  • Medical, dental, and vision care assistance
  • Prescription medication
  • Transportation
  • Burial assistance
  • Grave markers
  •  

    The Veterans Affairs department also provides assistance to ALL veterans and/or their family members in applying for federal benefits and other veterans aid, which include but are not limited to:

     

  • Service connected disability compensation
  • Special monthly compensation
  • Non-service connected pension
  • Surviving spouse pension
  • Aid & attendance/housebound
  • Military records upgrade and military records replacement
  • Agent Orange/PTSD/Desert Storm Sickness/Type II Diabetes/HepC
  • Application for VA HealthCare System
  • Application for admission to the Iowa Veterans Home
  • Headstones
  • All other federal programs for which veterans and/or dependents may be eligible
  •

    For those who wish to register with the VA Medical Center in Des Moines, please choose one of the following three options:

     

  • Obtain the forms on the VA website at: www.va.gov
  • Call the VA Medical Center at 1-800-294-8387 to request the forms
  • Contact the Story County VA Director Brett McLain at 382-7292 to obtain the forms

    WWII Honor Flight

    World War II veterans are eligible for a free flight to visit the World War II monument in Washington DC. The all-day trip provides an incredible experience and WWII Veterans are encouraged to apply. Handicap assistance is available.

    VA Travel Reimbursement Increase
    The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Monday, November 17, 2008 that eligible veterans will see an increase in the mileage reimbursement they receive for travel to VA facilities for medical care.

    Vietnam Conflict Veterans Bonus
    The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs is continuing to process applications for the "Vietnam Conflict Veterans Bonus." This bonus will cover those individuals who served in the U.S. military between July 1, 1973 and up to and including May 31, 1975. The amount of each individual's bonus is dependent on the months of service either in Vietnam or elsewhere in the world.
