Story County covers approximately 576 square miles. The county has both rural and urban areas. Story County includes the cities of Ames and Nevada and many smaller communities.

The Sheriffs Office is currently the largest single agency in Story County government. The Agency performs most of the peace keeping and emergency services for the unincorporated sections of Story County and 10 contract communities. The Sheriff's Office also operates the only jail in the county housing up to 104 inmates. The Office currently employs approximately 82 people in 4 different divisions.
