Function of this County Unit:
Story County Animal Control is charged with care and management animal issues within rural areas of Story County and areas that are in contract with Story County for their animal control needs.
Animal Control aids in:
- Housing and care for abandoned and roaming domestic pets,
- Animal neglect cases
- Investigating bites
- Managing wildlife encounters with the citizens of Story County.

The assessor is charged with several administrative and statutory duties; however, the primary duty and responsibility is to cause to be assessed all real property within his/her jurisdiction except that which is otherwise provided by law. This would include:

Function of this County Unit:
The Story County Attorney is the legal advisor and chief law enforcement officer for Story County.
The County Attorney DOES:
- Prosecute all violations of state criminal laws and county ordinances
- Provide legal advice to the Board of Supervisors, county, and township officers concerning county matters.
- Represent and defend the state, county, and its officers in officially related cases.
- Recover all moneys (debts, fines, penalties, etc.) owing to the state or county.
- Present all mental health commitment proceedings and all juvenile delinquency and child in need of assistance cases.
The County Attorney DOES NOT:
- Give legal advice to or represent private groups or persons.
- File lawsuits for private persons or defend them against lawsuits, including actions for dissolution of marriage.
- Prepare wills, deeds or other legal documents for private individuals.

Function of this County Unit:
The board of supervisors is the legislative body of the county, composed of 3 members. They are responsible for the following aspects of county business:
- County policy
- County budget
- Set county tax levy
- Approve bonds & reports
- Fill employee vacancies
- Economic development
The Story County Board of Supervisors meets regularly on Tuesdays at 9:30 in the morning. The Supervisors meet at the Administration Building located in Nevada. The Board Room is on the second floor. The public is encouraged to attend.

Function of this County Unit:
The court has general jurisdiction of all civil, criminal and juvenile cases and probate matters in the state. The district court, which is also known as the trial court, is the point of entry in the court system for most cases. The Iowa district court is composed of different kinds of judicial officers with varying amounts of jurisdiction - judicial magistrates, associate juvenile judges, associate probate judges, district associate judges, and district court judges.
The Clerk of Court is the contact for matters involving:
- Child support & Child custody
- Domestic Violence
- Juvenile Court
- Probate

The Story County Community Life Program is a community based human service agency which assists persons with cognitive and developmental disabilities to live, learn, work, and socialize in their environments of choice.
Program participants are provided with the opportunity to:
- Create an individualized program plan
- Achieve goals that are based on what is important to them
- Develop skills .
- Increase functioning, satisfaction, and growth potential.

Function of this County Unit:
To assist Story County citizens with accessing resources and services, allowing them the opportunity to improve their quality of life. Any Story County resident in need of assistance may apply for services. Each program has its own distinct set of criteria for eligibility. Through our office, you can find assistance with:
- Emergency rent & utilities (General Assistance)
- Donating to and obtaining furniture from the Furniture Bank
- Story County Veterans Affairs
- Central Point of Coordination (CPC) process for determining eligibility for funding of mental health services
- Case Management services for individuals with Chronic Mental Illness, Mental Retardation, Developmental Disabilities, and Brain Injury
- Information and referral for mental health services

Function of this County Unit:
We are proud of our areas, and we are pleased to make them available to all of you. The mission of the Story County Conservation Board is to enhance the quality of life for citizens of Story County by managing our natural resources, providing recreational opportunities, and by educating citizens to be caretakers of our natural environment.
The Conservation Board manages nearly 2,500 acres of parks and natural areas. The board takes a role in:
- Developing and managing wildlife habitat
- Lending assistance to private landowners.
- Administering the Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) program along 950 miles of county roads
- Outdoor education through the Environmental Education Program

The Story County Health Department which under the jurisdiction of the Story County Board of Health is responsible for:
- Permitting and inspection of wastewater treatment systems
- Permitting and inspection of private water supply wells and systems (water supply wells)
- Inspection of complaints, nuisance investigation and mitigation.
- Lead hazard testing, consultation, tracking and follow-up inspections
- Management, reporting, and record keeping for official documents dealing with field work

Planing & Zoning is charged with protecting and enhancing the public's health, safety and general welfare by effectively planning and regulating the built environment and sustaining resources while balancing the rights of our citizens with the public good. This is accomplished by:
- Effective Planning of where Development is allowed
- Reviewing Development plans and permits to insure that they are in harmony with Development Plans
- Allowing procedures for amendment and appeal to the public

Function of this County Unit:
The recorder's office maintains:
- Real Estate records
- Issues marriage certificates
- Boat, snowmobile, and ATV registrations
- Processes passport applications. As passport agents, recorders assist in completing and mailing applications for passports.
On July 1, 1997, recorders became registrars of vital records (births, deaths, and marriages).

Function of this County Unit:
The Story County Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for the whole of the County. This includes:
- Staffing Deputies to enforce State and Local laws in the unincorporated areas of Story County
- Providing law enforcement services to incorporated areas of the County under a Service Agreement
- Serving Civil Papers for Subpeonas, Eviction Notices and other legal proceedings such as garnishments
- Auctioning property for the settlement of debts determined in a court of law

Function of this County Unit:
The Commission of Veterans Affairs provides assistance to Story County veterans and family members who were discharged under Honorable Conditions.
Help with the following is available; subject to eligibility guidelines:
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utilities Food and provisions
- Medical and dental assistance
- Prescription medication
- Transportation
- Burial assistance Grave markers
We also provide assistance to ALL veterans and/or their family members in applying for federal benefits and other veterans aid, which include:
- Service connected disability compensation
- Special monthly compensation
- Non-service connected pension
- Surviving spouse pension
- Aid & attendance/housebound
- Military records upgrade and military records replacement
- Application for VA Health Care System
- Application for admission to the Iowa Veterans Home
- Headstones
- All federal programs for which veterans and/or dependents may be eligible
